Since I’m moving in a few days I don’t have any coffee or food in my home. I woke up feeling logy and had some serious tachycardia (heart beating at 130 per minute). I ached all over and could hardly bend my back was so stiff and painful. This is one of several possible scenarios I wake up to: I have fibromyalgia, osteoarthritis (seemingly every joint), stenosis of the cervical and lumbar spine, hypothyroidism, and sleep apnea. I can wake up feeling fine (rarely) or stiff as a board (mostly). I can have a racing heart and shortness of breath. I can be fatigued all day or gradually overcome it.

Yesterday morning I got dressed and headed out to HUB Roasters a few blocks away. As I left my apartment building I closed the gate behind me. About 25 feet down the alley there was an old man (older than me) slowly walking his dog. He turned around and shouted at me, “I wanted that gate open you stupid fuck!” I stood there shocked, but not surprised. Reno is full of these arrogant entitled cunts. After a few moments I looked straight at him and grabbed my crotch and gave it a few shakes. This infuriated him and he threatened me (again, not unusual for Reno). I walked off saying he could come and get some if he wanted. He was one of those bent over osteoporosis old dudes with a bad attitude; it wouldn’t have been much of a fight.

This encounter gnawed at me because they’re so frequent. I don’t do anything to intentionally piss off someone, but they end up angry at me. I closed the gate for security of the entire building. I’m not a mind reader. If that old fucker wanted to keep it open he should’ve stood there and protected it. I’m not here to serve him, or anyone for that matter.

I started another post a while back about an encounter with a crazy fucker on the bus (where else?). Briefly, this old arthritic dude (his hands were all bent and twisted) gets on the bus and makes himself the center of attention by switching seats every 30 seconds, singing The Kinks “(Wish I Could Fly Like) Superman” (I’m probably the only one to recognize it), talking to himself and trying to engage others. I was on my way to a doctor appointment (as usual) and just wanted some quiet. I turned around toward him and asked, “Can you please keep it down?” He gave me the double bird. Okay, I said, “I asked you politely.” He started in on me, another threat. He pointed at me and ran his finger across his throat. He jumped out of his seat so I stood up, 6’3” and 220 pounds, and said, “I will kick your balls repeatedly until they pop out of your mouth. What are you going to do with those arthritic hands of yours? You can’t even hold a knife.” He sat back down. All of this happened before the second stop!

He went off to the front of the bus and the driver told him he was going to eject him at the next stop (my stop, unfortunately). The crazy old dude put his head in his hands and said, “This isn’t the world I’m used to!” This was confirmation of something I’ve noticed about Reno…people here don’t act like people anywhere else. They try to enter elevators before the other people have exited, they don’t understand how to pay at Walmart, they don’t understand how to ride the bus. They don’t act like normal adults who have experienced 50, 60, 70 years of life. They act like they came across from another universe and all of this is brand new.

THIS ISN’T THE WORLD I’M USED TO. Amen brother.

After almost getting into a steroid-fueled physical altercation at a bus stop because this motherfucker deliberately sat down right beside me and lit a cigarette. And as most inconsiderate assholes, he felt he had the right too. I used to just move away and avoid confrontation, but my fibromyalgia treatment includes periodic short-term prednisone treatment. Every rage-filled encounter I’ve had with RTC Ride passengers, drivers, and security recently has involved this necessary medical treatment. This last time was for neuropathy, a painful reddening of my hands and feet with itching and burning that can’t be stopped with antihistamines or topical steroids. I also had a recurrence of my Chinese Hives, welts and red spots all over my back and chest. All of these are treatable with oral steroids, but I’ve had to use them four times over the last six months.

Since I’m barred from using the bus transfer station (because of my trespassing conviction) I miss connections by going to other bus stops. I have to walk more and be inconvenienced even more than I was before. My first transfer spot is by the Ramada Inn and its most nasty of slot parlors, Diamond’s Casino. Because I can’t transfer at the bus station I miss my connection with the Route 5 bus by a minute or two and end up waiting in the sun for half an hour. However, this time I got smart and took the Route 15 bus that runs 15 minutes after the Route 5 and got off at stop by the Salvation Army where, at that time of the morning, is shady and cooler. I would then wait 15 more minutes in relative comfort for the Route 5 bus to take me to WinCo Foods. This is what poverty is like. I spend two hours traveling a six mile round trip by bus. That’s one reason I am filled with rage at RTC Ride all the time.

I’m standing in the shade trying to avoid the dude sitting on the back rest of the bus stop bench smoking a nasty smelling blunt and doom scrolling top volume videos on his “smart phone” (certainly smarter than he was). I thought about my encounter earlier and how smug and justified that smoker was. He was a former Marine and very proud of it. He said I needed to find Jesus and he would pray for me. As if. Then I got to thinking that this is the kind of American Christian who wouldn’t recognize Christ even if he was walking and talking with him. So, a lyric was born.

It took me over three months to record my latest original song and I’m in the process of moving to Albania so I don’t want to get involved in a long project. I went to Wondera.ai and asked if it could create an alt-country song with lyrics I provided. It could so I fixed up the quick notes I had written and here it is.

I will use AI on a need to basis. It’s easy and the results can be startling. This is the version with my original lyrics. It also created its own version modifying my lyrics. It’s called “Seeking Salvation”. I have uploaded both for digital streaming distribution.

I am sorely pissed and disappointed with humanity. I had to cancel a CT scan today because I thought I would be sedated at the imaging department of the hospital. Nope. SELF-SEDATION and the surgeon wasn’t contacted by the imaging department so no sedative was prescribed. I didn’t know that. I also didn’t know that I needed a blood test because I had the CT Scan because of my age. That was also not ordered by my surgeon. So, fuck it. I canceled. I don’t give a shit anymore. We all die. Guaranteed. When we die is the variable. There is no set expiration date.

Anyway, some very stupid people were on the bus yesterday. They were cold and couldn’t figure out the bus window they were sitting under was open. All I can do is shake my head and cry out that stupidity has gotten worse post-pandemic. The perfect storm of disease, lack of education, critical thinking, and common sense. Parents glued to smartphones instead of watching their two year olds toddling around unattended. We’re so stupid we put warning labels on television ads “not to do this at home.” Or signs like this:

How fucking out of it do you have to be not to know your dog’s paws are blistering and they’re overheated? Oh yeah, got my ear pods in listening to some shit AI band on Spotify and looking at my phone. Yesterday I blind man with the red-tipped white cane was walking down the sidewalk as I walked toward the bus stop. Narrow sidewalk and I wanted to avoid him walking into me or tapping me with his cane. I almost called out that I was nearby, but he had…EAR PODS! Dude is blind and not listening for cars or people. Well, fuck you no eyes!

I walk down the sidewalk, ride the bus, and everything without distractions. Why? Because I grew up without those and I grew up in New York City. Shit happens fast and you need all your senses open to know what’s up. Also, you miss the beauty of the world when you close yourself off from it. Birds singing, freshly cut grass, the sound of the river flowing, beautiful flowers. Instead, idiots, morons, dumb asses, and dickheads surround me.

So, are you claiming Buddhahood? Not exactly by the standard definition. A Buddha is someone who has woken up completely. Bodhidharma was already awake, but his *role* was to shatter other people’s illusions with tough, often abrasive methods. He sat facing a wall for nine years. He told Emperor Wu that his extensive good deeds “amounted to no merit.”

Complaining to management has done nothing and inconsiderate assholes can’t be taught to consider their neighbors. It’s just them and the idiot they voted for: Donald J. Trump 45-47.

We worship ideas and concepts we ourselves created. Religion? Icons? Heroes? Money? Statues of Gods? Fever dreams.

Consider the alligator. Does it question why it wants to snap its jaws and tear at flesh? No. That’s its purpose. Its nature. Does a dog have Buddha-nature? I don’t know, I’m not a dog.

Why? The brilliant human concept of property and wealth. The paragon of animals, indeed.

We shit all over the Earth and wonder why we don’t fix it. It costs too much money. The concept we created over the actual reality of our entire world’s health and our own. Brilliant!

When I was a teenage stoner back in the 1970s there were many comedy shows on Saturday night. On the PBS station, WNET-TV Channel 13 was Monty Python’s Flying Circus for dada-like surreal comedy, then SCTV on WOR-TV Channel 9 for fantastic impersonations and really bizarre story-lines. My favorite was the parody of Ben-Hur with John Candy playing Judah Ben-Hur as Curly from the Three Stooges! Then Saturday Night Live with the Not Ready for Prime Time Players. In 1981, SCTV-90 would broadcast after Saturday Night Live from 1 am to 2:30 am. Being a teenager, staying up late wasn’t the problem it is now as a pain-racked 65 year old on opioids and any medication that causes fatigue.

I have lots of favorite moments from SCTV as I mentioned. Rick Moranis as Woody Allen in Play It Again, Bob a parody of Play It Again, Sam with Woody channeling Bob Hope, played impeccably by Dave Thomas. “The Great White North” with Thomas and Moranis as the McKenzie Brothers, eh. And Catherine as Lola Heatherton, the kind of arm candy lounge act combination of Lola Falana and Joey Heatherton who would frequent The Tonight Show.

Self-awareness is a powerful logic that it allows us clarity in our thoughts and actions. It counters self-delusion, the lies we tell ourselves to avoid facing the truth. Self-awareness is knowing why, self-delusion is the shrug of the shoulders and the “I don’t know.”

This Dear Abby is a perfect example of a lack of self-awareness and a full-on immersion in delusion. After Abby’s answer I will give my own, but like Mumon’s comments in The Gateless Gate.

Best Friend Refuses To End Abusive Relationship

DEAR ABBY: My best friend, “Brooke,” started dating a man, “Angus,” last year. From the start, he made a poor impression. He met Brooke while he was dating another woman but didn’t tell Brooke about her. Brooke continued hanging out with him only after he broke up with his girlfriend.

The past few months have been nothing short of awful. I see Brooke weekly for coffee, and all she does is tell me how mean Angus is to her and her family. He calls her names, emotionally manipulates her, tells her what she can and cannot wear and looks through every inch of her phone.

Her family loathes him. Her dad told me he never wants to see him again. They are constantly urging Brooke to end the relationship. None of her friends likes him, and she doesn’t seem to either, but will not, for whatever reason, break up with him.

Last week, they decided to get a puppy together. It’s getting exhausting for all parties, including Brooke. What should I do? Should I just leave it alone and let her figure it out and be there when it ends? -- WISE FRIEND IN NEBRASKA

DEAR WISE FRIEND: You are a supportive friend, but you cannot live Brooke’s life for her. Buying a puppy with someone who is abusive does not bode well for her or for the animal, which may become the focus of the abuser’s anger if he feels he cannot control Brooke. Because she won’t listen to family or friends, Brooke IS going to have to figure things out for herself. Save your advice for people who will listen.

Sometimes asking a troubled person, “Why?”, is the kindest thing you can do. Sometimes illogical thinking must be revealed with logic. In this case, asking Brooke why she stays with Angus then listening to her response. Maybe it will be an epiphany for Brooke, but it will definitely be an epiphany for the WISE FRIEND IN NEBRASKA. Knowing what Brooke’s reason for staying with Angus will allow the wise friend a path to action.

Some of you reading this will think I’m putting you on, pulling your leg, etc. I am a caustically sardonic person, but I assure you I am offering good advice about self-awareness, self-delusion, and the nature of Mind. Reaching satori and ending samsara is the highest and noblest pursuit for a human. Everyone is a potential Buddha.

1. Joshu’s Dog

A monk asked Joshu, a Chinese Zen master: “Has a dog Buddha-nature or not?”

Joshu answered: “Mu.” ^*

Mumon’s comment: To realize Zen one has to pass through the barrier of the patriarchs. Enlightenment always comes after the road of thinking is blocked. If you do not pass the barrier of the patriarchs or if your thinking road is not blocked, whatever you think, whatever you do, is like a tangling ghost. You may ask: What is a barrier of a patriarch? This one word, Mu, is it.

This is the barrier of Zen. If you pass through it you will see Joshu face to face. Then you can work hand in hand with the whole line of patriarchs. Is this not a pleasant thing to do?

If you want to pass this barrier, you must work through every bone in your body, through every pore of your skin, filled with this question: What is Mu? and carry it day and night. Do not believe it is the common negative symbol meaning nothing. It is not nothingness, the opposite of existence. If you really want to pass this barrier, you should feel like drinking a hot iron ball that you can neither swallow nor spit out.

Then your previous lesser knowledge disappears. As a fruit ripening in season, your subjectivity and objectivity naturally become one. It is like a dumb man who has had a dream. He knows about it but he cannot tell it.

When he enters this condition his ego-shell is crushed and he can shake the heaven and move the earth. He is like a great warrior with a sharp sword. If a Buddha stands in his way, he will cut him down; if a patriarch offers him any obstacle, he will kill him; and he will be free in his way of birth and death. He can enter any world as if it were his own playground. I will tell you how to do this with this koan:

Just concentrate your whole energy into this Mu, and do not allow any discontinuation. When you enter this Mu and there is no discontinuation, your attainment will be as a candle burning and illuminating the whole universe.

Has a dog Buddha-nature?

This is the most serious question of all.

If you say yes or no,

You lose your own Buddha-nature.

My answer is, “I don’t know, I’m not a dog.”

6. Buddha Twirls a Flower

When Buddha was in Grdhrakuta mountain he turned a flower in his fingers and held it before his listeners. Every one was silent. Only Maha-Kashapa smiled at this revelation, although he tried to control the lines of his face.

Buddha said: “I have the eye of the true teaching, the heart of Nirvana, the true aspect of non-form, and the ineffable stride of Dharma. It is not expressed by words, but especially transmitted beyond teaching. This teaching I have given to Maha-Kashapa.”

Mumon’s comment: Golden-faced Gautama thought he could cheat anyone. He made the good listeners as bad, and sold dog meat under the sign of mutton. And he himself thought it was wonderful. What if all the audience had laughed together? How could he have transmitted the teaching? And again, if Maha-Kashapa had not smiled, how could he have transmitted the teaching? If he says that realization can be transmitted, he is like the city slicker that cheats the country dub, and if he says it cannot be transmitted, why does he approve of Maha-Kashapa?

At the turning of a flower

His disguise was exposed.

No one in heaven or earth can surpass

Maha-Kashapa’s wrinkled face.

I am not as kind or gentle as Buddha. I’ll slap you across the face or scream at you to bring about enlightenment. I wouldn’t be silent and twirl a fucking flower. You have to hand it to Gautama though, he was a great prop comic.

The enlightened man can’t speak words to describe enlightenment, because the unenlightened can’t understand. So, Joshu says, “Nothing.” Gautama Buddha smiles and twirls a flower. Shogen tells the truth.

Look at Jesus. His allegories about knocking on doors, camels going through needle eyes, lilies of the field, asking and being answered, mustard seeds, fruits of the trees, etc are too obtuse for the ancient Jews, even in Aramaic, let alone Greek and Latin for later goyim. What did he get for his trouble trying to describe enlightenment? Crucified. His corpse stolen out of his tomb. And 2000 years of death, disease, and corruption in his name. Tsk tsk tsk. Better to keep your mouth shut and twirl a flower.

And what do I do? Well, I used to get stoned on weed and go to my local and tell anyone who would listen to destroy preconceptions of reality. Beware of Maya. Now I don’t get stoned and seldom drink. I am also very alone because I’ve driven off all my friends with my drunken gibberish. Why doesn’t the enlightened man speak? Because he sounds foolish and insane. Better to keep your mouth shut. As a fiction and non-fiction writer and a screenwriter the rule of thumb is SHOW DON’T TELL. Lead by example.

Now for my blathering songs.

This might be my best effort, but it falls short musically. I’m not very talented.
