Speaking Of Orange Tinged People

1990 recording by Meat Cigars

This recording isn’t perfect, but that’s what makes it perfect. We booked a session at Egg Studios in February, 1990. Conrad Uno, who had just moved the studio into the basement of his house and he wanted to test his equipment, gave us the bargain rate of $200 for ten hours. Conrad was great with recording…his eight track studio had the old console from Stax/Volt in Memphis! Doyle and I had limited studio experience. The stuff we recorded in Portland didn’t sound like I wanted it to because we were a one take band and didn’t punch-in to correct mistakes. This carried over to the Egg sessions as well. One take, maybe two, and an occasional punch-in. Ten hours may seem like a lot of time, but with setting up, mic placement, sound levels, etc. there’s not much time left for recording and mixing.

I believe we recorded on Saturday, February 17, 1990 because it snowed a lot and the roads were a mess. When we all showed up Conrad was surprised we made it.

This cover was a staple of Meat Cigars beginning with the Portland band in 1987. We had dropped a number of songs from our repetoire when we were in Seattle. This recording is sort of an outtake, because of its imperfections.

“Oompa Loompa/In The Year 2525”.
