A little background. This song was written by Nick Lowe in 1974 when he was in Brinsley Schwarz. I came by it by listening to Armed Forces by Elvis Costello and the Attractions, an album produced by Nick Lowe.
In 1983 I suggested to the members of The Evolutionary Dance we cover it, hoping I would sing it. I didn’t, but I played the bass. My vocals are like a “cracked bell” as my friend Melanie put it. I’m usually off by a fifth, like I’m singing harmonies, but I try to sing with passion. I spent much of this week trying to get the vocals right. I think I need a new USB microphone. This one is hard to adjust and picks up lots of background noise, even though it’s a cardoid mic. Ah well.
My version is entirely based on The Attractions rendition. If it makes you want to unsubscribe, I understand.
Next song covered will be a Beatles song from the Revolver album. I hope it doesn’t take five weeks to finish.
Shalom!
